Rabbit Hole - Day 2

Couldn’t find an art store that had everything I needed within walking distance, so biked down to Market St. with Y to pick up some bookbinding materials. Having to go downtown was an experience in itself. With all the office workers, tourists and other passers-by pretty much off the streets, it is, as you might expect much emptier. Of course those on the streets with nowhere else to go are all still there, and without the cover of the rest of the populace, the City’s problems are brought into very sharp relief. It’s no longer just the occasional “crazy person” you come across, and the yells echo eerily off the empty glass buildings. There is (somehow) a new Supreme store on Market, and if you weren’t pushing all your belongings in a shopping cart with a blanket over your shoulder, you probably had a Supreme shopping bag dangling from your fingertips. But who am I to judge? I was, after all, buying bookbinding supplies from the Blick next door.

Back home, and back to work.

Trim paper to size.

Fold and organize into booklets of 4 sheets each - called “signatures”, mind you.

Measure and make holes for stitching. With an awl, mind you.

Start stitching. With a curved needle, mind you.

Stitching complete!

Trim the edges.

And ta-da!

I think the thread I used was too thick compared to the paper. Also maybe I pulled the stitches too tight making it hard to align all the signatures along the spine. Today I will use thinner thread and less tension. Let’s see if I can get everything lined up pretty.
